A different way of looking at things

BEhind the Signal

Alter Aspect is an independent creative studio built around a simple idea: changing how you look at something can change what you do with it.

We explore the things that interest us, question the way they're usually approached, and see what happens when ideas from different worlds are brought together.

Sometimes that becomes something to read. Sometimes something to use, play, wear or keep.

The form changes. The thinking behind it doesn't.

IT STARTED WITH AN IDEA

Alter Aspect began with a shared interest in creativity, culture and the ideas that shape how we live.

What started around art and apparel gradually became something broader. We found ourselves writing about philosophy and culture, developing tools for problems we encountered ourselves, experimenting with games and software, and drawing connections between subjects that didn't always seem connected at first.

Rather than forcing those interests into separate projects, Alter Aspect became the place where they could meet.

A studio shaped not around one kind of product, but around a way of thinking.

THE MEDIUM ISN'T THE POINT

An idea can take many forms.

Writing can introduce a different perspective. Design can turn an idea into something tangible. A tool can make knowledge useful. A game can create a space to learn through experience. Even something as simple as a piece of clothing can carry a story, philosophy or reminder with it.

We choose the form that makes sense for the idea rather than limiting the idea to what we've made before.

That's why the things created under Alter Aspect can look very different while still belonging to the same place.

BUILT TO BE USEFUl

We like ideas, but we're particularly interested in what happens when an idea becomes something more that you can actually do something with.

If we encounter a problem, we might build a tool for it. If there's something we want to understand, we might research and write about it. If an idea is better experienced than explained, it might eventually become a game. If a philosophy can be captured visually, it might become a design.

Some projects are practical. Others are expressive. Some exist simply because we think they should.

What matters is that there is a reason for making them.

Create things that spark imagination, ambition and the confidence to explore something differently.

🩶

Entertain

Make the experience itself worth having — whether you're reading, playing, watching, listening or discovering something new.

MADE FROM WHAT WE LOVE

A lot of Alter Aspect comes from the collision between our interests.

Games. Technology. Philosophy. Art. Anime and manga. Street culture. Music. Finance. Psychology. History. The strange corners of the internet and the useful things you sometimes find there.

We're interested in what these subjects can teach us, where they overlap, and what can be created when something from one world is viewed through the lens of another.

The aim isn't to turn everything into a lesson.

It's to stay curious enough to find the ideas worth carrying forward.

INDEPENDENT BY DESIGN

Alter Aspect is a small independent studio.

That gives us the freedom to follow an interesting idea without needing it to fit neatly into a category first. We can experiment, learn as we build, change direction when something deserves a better approach, and let projects develop into whatever they need to become.

Not everything we explore will become a product.

Sometimes the result is simply a better understanding of something — and that's worth sharing too.

Alter Aspect began on the southern UK coastal shores of Eastbourne, designing from an urban pocket of existence where the sun, sand and sea meet the wilderness of the country.

AN ALTERED ASPECT

The name Alter Aspect describes much of what sits underneath the studio.

An aspect is a way something can be seen, understood or experienced. Alter the aspect, and the thing itself may not have changed — but your relationship with it can.

A game can become a way of learning. A piece of clothing can become a reminder. A problem can become a system. An unfamiliar culture can reveal a familiar human idea.

There is rarely only one useful way to see something, and sometimes changing the angle is enough to reveal what was there all along.
